Coat Closet Re-Organize

Yesterday morning our apartment complex was switching out internet devices and replacing air filters for our air conditioning system. So I had to empty out the coat closet so they could get to the panel and move the tv stand so they could access the cable box. It prompted a re-organizing frenzy, why not take everything out, clean, go-through and organize!
Step 1. Clean out
After the internet was switched out I decided to tackle the coat closet. First I cleared everything out and swept out the closet. I was reminded about some shoes that I hadn't worn in a while and also found the missing tv remote that has been lost since we moved into the apartment in May. You just never know what get hidden in spaces.
Our coat closet is small but I'm so glad to have it! It has just enough space for the everyday shoes and jackets that we are wearing right now. Its October and its just now getting cooler in the evenings for me to grab my jean jacket. - Time for some hot apple cider! The closet also must house our vacuum, there's no other place in the apartment for it. Grocery bags have to live in the closet as well and be an easy reach, now If I can just remember to take them to the store.
Step 2. Shoes
So after I went through the bags and the shoes, trying to decide which ones to keep and which ones to give away. I began to put together the shoe shelf. I ordered it from Amazon and Its been one of my best purchases for my apartment. I originally ordered it when we lived at our previous apartment for that coat closet. That closet was even smaller and this was the best budget friendly customizable shoe shelf that would fit. The great thing is that now we have moved into this space I have been able to change the self into the height and width that works for me now. One thing I always keep in mind when living in apartments is how organization items need to be flexible and functional in temporary spaces.
For this closet I decided to build two short shelves and create a "his & hers" sides of the closet, his shoes on one side and my shoes on the other. This will help us keep things simple and tidy.
Step 3. Bags
Why do I have so many bags? They accumulate more and more without me realizing it. Do I really need this many? Probably not, but some are just too useful and too cute to give up. Thermal bags for grocery's and traveling. Large Ikea and TJ Maxx bags for hauling bulky items.
The grocery bags need to stay easy to reach for weekly food trips. The others I put into a wicker basket that fits well on the self. The basket is easy to pull down when I need the other bags for other shopping experiences.
Step 3. Coats
It's starting to get a little cooler out and we can finally start wearing our jackets in the evenings. It will probably be about another month before the cold and I will be switching out the jackets in this closet for the heavy coats that I keep stored under the bed. For the heavier items I would recommend wooden coat hangers. they will hold up and not brake like flimsy plastic hangers. Plus It will also keep your coats in pristine condition.
I kept with the "his and hers" side for the jackets and coats. Again I think that will keep things tidy. For the longest coats I hung on the outer edges of the closet and hung the shortest items in the middle so not to conflict with the shoes too much.
