Making Room for Two: Moving Into Our 760 sq. ft. Apartment Together
Downsizing into a 760 sq. ft. one-bedroom apartment from a 820 sq. ft. Apartment with my boyfriend has been… a journey. A cozy, chaotic, clutter-clearing journey. 60 sq. ft. doesn't sound like a huge difference but wow, it really is.
Between my endless stash of throw pillows, both of our vintage record collections, and both of our borderline-hoarder-level clothing piles, we realized pretty quickly that fitting everything into a smaller space was going to take more than just boxes and bubble wrap — it takes strategy, compromise, and a sense of humor.
Here’s how we’re navigating the Great Merge:
The Pre-Move Purge: Letting Go (Sort of)
Before even setting foot in the new apartment, we each took a hard look at our stuff. If it didn’t spark joy, serve a purpose, or make sense in our shared space, it got donated, sold, or politely put in storage (aka, our parents' garage — thanks, Mom!). We ended up taking three loads of stuff (a mirror, some pots and pans, clothes and some other random stuff that we had forgotten about to the local charity shop.
Now that we have moved everything in, its time to set things up and find a spot for everything to belong. My goal for this blog is to show our journey to get organized step by step and bin by bin.
Tip: If you both have similar items (like kitchen gadgets or furniture), pick the best one and let the other go. You probably don’t need two sets of flatware or three sets of measuring cups. (We definitely didn’t.)
Final Thoughts
Moving is a big undertaking no matter how much space you are moving to and from. Doing it in under 800 square feet is an even bigger one. But the challenge has actually made us feel closer — and more organized than we’ve ever been.
If you're moving in with your partner and staring down a mountain of stuff, trust me: with patience, a few storage hacks, and a donation bin always on standby, you'll find your rhythm — and your floor. Just remember to be respectful of the others persons things, you never know what might have sentimental meaning.
My Top picks for helpful Storage items that are moving ready:
Shop [WeatherPro Tote] - These nesting totes are great to store all types of items from camping gear to seasonal items. But when it's time to move just lock the lids in place.
Shop [Moving Bags] - These bags are heavy duty and keep clothing and towels clean during moving. Plus they fold away when not in use.
